Epidemics under controlNo new outbreaks of bird flu, foot-and-mouth and blue ear pig diseases have been detected in provinces and cities across the country over the past few weeks.

The National Steering Committee for Bird Flu Control made the announcement at a review meeting in Hanoi on January 22.

Experts feared that these diseases would spread following recent prolonged cold spells that weakened the immune system of birds and cattle.

However, local efforts to combat the diseases have paid off, and epidemics have been completely contained.

Localities have tried to restore flocks and herds to ensure an adequate supply of meat for consumers during the upcoming lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.

At the meeting, experts also warned about the importation and trading in discarded children from China, saying the situation has yet to be kept under control in the northern mountain border province of Cao Bang.

Phan Van Dong, Head of the Animal Health Department, asked localities to strengthen epidemic monitoring and prevention by dispatching veterinarians to hot spots and controlling the transport of illegally-imported chickens or those of unknown origin.

Localities must establish inspection teams to examine large farms which had been hit by epidemics to promptly detect and deal with outbreaks, said Dong.

He proposed monitoring the emergence of viruses and the efficiency of vaccines, as well as increasing the efficiency of communications campaigns to raise public awareness of safe food.
